Shit Bangs / Language Barrier

RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW

Only one release in and Hashtag have already stamped their authority on the D&B world. No surprise, when you consider that this combo consists of Erb n Dub and KG, already scene veterans in their own right. Tracks from their debut release, the Hurt and Pain EP, have been blowing up raves and radios worldwide. And now they’re back to prove it wasn’t a fluke.

First up, we have Shit Bangs. This plays by its own rules.
It’s the sound of trap music being broken down and reintroduced to its UK dance music heritage. What results is a half-speed D&B workout that will quickly gain a rep as the one to draw for to induce involuntary skanking.

And, just to remind you Hashtag have more than one trick up their sleeve, then we have Language Barrier. This sneaks into your consciousness with filtered synths and a rolling beat before opening up into hands-in-the-air stabs. Emotive arpeggiated figures flicker into the scene to herald a drop that ravers won’t be able to resist. This is dancefloor manipulation material.

With airplay on Kiss 109, Radio 1 and 1Xtra already achieved for this release, Hashtag’s music has quickly proved to be an essential part of all bass-conscious DJ’s sets.

HURT & PAIN EP – HASHTAG

RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW

You already know Tantrum Desire. They regularly destroy raves and festivals worldwide as DJs. Their productions are heard everywhere from purist D&B DJ sets to daytime Radio 1. They’ve shaped a sound which weaves in dubstep and electro influences to push the boundaries of drum and bass. You know that already so, of course, you’d expect their new release to continue the evolution.

And it does. First up is What Is Your Desire, featuring the vocal talents of I-Kay, who D&B aficionados will recognise from anthems by the likes of Danny Byrd and Sigma. This is unmistakably the sound of now. Euphoric vocals soar over electro-tinged synths, building to a drop which delivers low-end power multiplied by I-Kay’s energy. This is mind manipulation, turning up your serotonin levels whether you like it or not.

That’s just the radio edit. Next is the Dance Floor Pressure Mix which strips out the vocals and turns up the filth to deliver a serrated-edge version. Tantrum Desire keep the percussive riffs and builds, but add more weight in the bass to fulfil the needs of the sub-hungry junglist.

Another twist in the tale is provided by dubstep’s teenage prodigy Kinzy, whose mix grimes it up even further. He’s taken Tantrum Desire’s original story and set it in a sparse urban soundscape, populated by snarling bass tones and vicious drums.

Not to be outdone on the darkness, Tantrum Desire then deliver Unicron. This opens with percussive riffs and spacey strings, building to a half-speed D&B drop. Bass, mid and high-end do battle, shifting focus rapidly between frequency ranges to keep the dancefloor energised.

What Is Your Desire and Unicron serve to showcase the versatility of the Tantrum Desire sound. Given their track record of tracks and records you know these are sounds you’ll soon be hearing

spun by everyone from original junglists to brand new converts.

Tracklisting:

1. What Is Your Desire Ft I-Kay (Radio Edit)
2. What Is Your Desire Ft I-Kay (Dance Floor Pressure Mix)
3. What Is Your Desire Ft I-Kay (Kinzy Remix)
4. Unicron

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION

HURT & PAIN EP – HASHTAG

RELEASE DATE: 26th August 2012

At the moment, the Hashtag name won’t mean anything to you. When you
find out that it’s the new production moniker for Erb n Dub and KG,
though, that means a lot. These two guys have spent the last few years
becoming essential components of the drum and bass world. Between
them, they’ve remixed DJ Fresh, The Freestylers and Foreign Beggars,
built three labels, signed Netsky and Fred V & Grafix, and DJ’d and
performed live all over the world. That’s alongside the small matter
of consistently producing dancefloor-destroying records.

Their first release after signing exclusively to Technique Recordings,
the ìHurt & Pain EPî lays out the blueprint of what these two
producers are all about. The title track weaves a soulful vocal sample
and haunting melodies around sharp beats and expansive bass textures.
This is a tune to make ravers float away on a hit of pure music vapour.

Next up is ìParalysisî, which seems to offer a similar vibe in the
wandering-cloud intro before flipping the vibe and bringing the
thunderstorm. Hashtag throw it down hard into a grimy bassline, ghost
story riffs and snappy beats that are guaranteed to cause full-on
skank-out action.

Then we have ìTake Controlî. This delivers an tension-filled intro and
explosive drop that’s precision-tooled rewind material. With
expertly-crafted stabs and builds, to take the energy levels
increasingly skyward, this is the sound of Hashtag stamping their
authority on the dancefloor.

Finally, Hashtag reveal another secret weapon with a dubstep reworking
of ìHurt & Painî. Keeping the same atmospheric, tuneful motifs as the
D&B version, the slower tempo lets the low-end really come to the
forefront.

Erb n Dub and KG have proven their credentials individually, and now
they’ve formed Hashtag, this elite unit is set to hit raves and
airwaves hard.

Tracklisting:

1. Hurt & Pain
2. Paralysis
3. Take Control
4. Hurt & Pain (Dubstep Mix)

PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION

GHETTO BOY / BLUNDERBUSS – 2DB

RELEASE DATE: 19th Aug

For drum and bass lovers, the 2DB name evokes the golden days of rave
delivered with a future-proof production style. And they’ve been
working hard to cement their position as official torch-bearers for
their style. Only this year, they’ve hit hard with the huge “Virus”
from the “Crossfire EP”, “Amiga Man” backed with “Happy Days”, and the
monumental “Break the Walls EP”. While the scene’s still reeling from
that assault, they’re back with this one-two punch of “Ghetto Boy” and
“Blunderbuss”.

First up, “Ghetto Boy”. For anyone who knows their music, the title is
enough to build excitement about this track. We all know Donny
Hathaway’s “Little Ghetto Boy” vocal, and Dr Dre’s seminal use of it
on his 1992 album “The Chronic”. Now, 2DB have taken it to another
level. Beautiful, liquid bass and crisp, seventies-influenced beats
roll under the classic sample, capturing its soul and rewiring it for
a twenty-first century audience.

Then, just in case you thought 2DB had gone soft, they smack you in
the face with “Blunderbuss”. Full on jungle percussion builds and
evolves, underpinned with a driving bassline to keep die-hard ravers
on the dancefloor. This is archetypal funk-filled drum and bass music
that will be an instant get-up-and-skank moment wherever it’s dropped.

This release is another milestone in 2DB’s ever-advancing campaign to
make the old skool new again. If you didn’t think drum and bass
producers could do soul and funk, then these tracks are going to prove
you wrong. These tracks are perfect DJ tools to flip your set between
styles, or to drop on your radio show to demonstrate what true D&B can
be.

A. Ghetto Boy
AA. Blunderbuss

The word “unique” gets bandied about a lot when new artists are being
promoted. MaxNRG, Technique’s latest signing, however, deserves that
moniker. Representing Ukraine, he’s been a pioneer of the drum and
bass scene in his homeland since the late nineties, and now label
bosses Drumsound and Bassline Smith have lit the fuse that’s going to
blow up his reputation worldwide.

From the opening bars of the title track of this EP, “Prometheus”,
you can tell there’s something different about this producer. Sure,
it’s got the dance-demolishing bass and beats that you would expect
from a Technique Recordings release, but it’s MaxNRG’s melodic sense
that really sets him apart. Twisting Eastern European musicality
around the drum and bass paradigm creates a style that you’ve really
never heard before.

Then, “Arkan” takes it up another notch, explicitly laying out the
blueprint to MaxNRG’s approach. This is unmistakably the sound of
Ukrainian D&B. Traditional folk sounds organically blend into
razor-edge synth-work in a way you wouldn’t have thought possible. The
combination of styles melds into a high-energy workout guaranteed to
become a rave anthem.

Next, just to show he’s got more than one trick up his sleeve, Max
throws down “Metro 2033 VIP”. This is a slice of technoid darkness
designed to show that he can do atmosphere and tension as well as
upbeat melody. Layers of floating pads and percussive sounds dissolve
into a skank-out drop to prove this producer has got all bases covered.

And while he’s covering bases, the final track “Sunset of Empire”
covers two in one. He delivers a beautiful film-score panorama of an
intro, and then brutally switches and glitches things up with a
serrated bass-drop.

The “Prometheus EP” is just the beginning of MaxNRG’s assault on the
world of D&B as part of the Technique Recordings crew. Any discerning
DJ who hears these tunes will want to be part of that assault too.
Ukranian D&B has planted its flag, and now it’s here to stay.
