RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW!

Ukrainian drum and bass pioneer MaxNRG signed to Technique Recordings last year, and instantly proved his credentials to the UK scene. His debut EP, “Prometheus”, showed off a melodic sensibility that provides an ideal counterpoint to his tough beats and basslines, resulting in heavy radio and rave rotation. So, time to show off more of this flavour.

And that flavour, as MaxNRG has already proved, has a lot to do with melody, which is at the top of the agenda for “Hide Away My Heart”. A sing-along refrain and cleverly interweaving riffs create the calm before the firestorm of the drop. An, proving the flexibility of this style, on top of the D&B mix, there’s a selection of other delivery systems for the payload. A Radio Mix, an Instrumental Mix, a savage Dubstep Mix and even a electro-plosive House Mix, proving that, whatever your flavour, MaxNRG’s style can get you hyped.

This flavour’s all about melody, but that’s not the end of the story. “Danger Zone” flips the musicality into another dimension. Now, it’s deployed to create an unsettling horror-movie landscape, populated by tormented samples, before filtered beats and a gravelly bassline slowly move into view. On the face of it, this is a simple, if dark-hued roller, but as the tune progresses, sounds become modulated beyond your wildest expectations to draw you further into this paradigm.

If you don’t know about MaxNRG yet, then you’d better not miss out on this release. In these two tracks, he’s shown that his style can encompass both the light and the darkness, making his output vital parts of any selector’s armoury.

RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW!

The first salvo of Crossfire hit at the beginning of last year. It was an EP that gave warning that Technique Recordings’ elite unit of producers were the ones
to watch for 2012. And the ubiquity of their tunes all over Radio 1, 1Xtra and Kiss, and in raves worldwide, soon proved that it wasn’t a warning to be taken lightly. Now it’s time to give 2013 the same treatment.

First up is Oxygen, from heavyweight outfit 2DB, drawing in the listener with subtle arpeggios and evolving riffs, creating a warm and melodic intro to the Crossfire experience. Then KG and Erb n Dub, in their Hashtag guise, switch things up with a sparser, technoid-paranoia workout in Don’t You Want Me. And proving that you can’t pigeon-hole Technique, there’s yet another sound on display next with a steel-reinforced VIP mix of L Plus’s anthemic Time Travel from 2011.

Halfway through the EP, and still the variety keeps coming from the Technique team. MaxNRG drops Grimey Beats into the mixture, a half-speed D&B stomper that combines elements of reggae, electro and R&B with devastating consequences. Then L Plus is back for a second contribution with End of Story, a track which takes his trademark silk-textured synths and street- hardened beats and twists them around subtle musical reference points. Then finally, 2DB come through to wrap up proceedings with Spud Gun, a tune which rolls in under the radar before jump- ing out at you with a powerful assault of twenty-first century acid.

If you were anywhere within hearing distance of a bass-conscious DJ in 2012, you’ll have heard a Technique Recordings release. But, even if you’re late to the party, this second Crossfire show- case is here to demonstrate why these flavours should be on everyone’s setlist.

RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW

2DB have established themselves as a production outfit determined to take old skool sensibilities and deliver them with razor-edge production techniques. With a string of acclaimed releases including the recent Ghetto Boy backed with Blunderbuss, they’ve proven their alchemical mastery of combining emotive melodies with floor-shaking bass aggression.

So, now for the latest twist in the tale.

First up is Bassface. With a name like that, you might think you know exactly what to expect, but 2DB always have a trick or two up their sleeve. Opening with uplifting synth-work, with just a hint of rough-hewn low-end, the throttle is quickly engaged to push into a half-speed drop. Bass and high-end interplay with melodic fills, but just when you think you’ve got the measure of the tune you’re made to think again. A floaty breakdown breaks down your defences and then builds back up to kick you with a full-speed D&B workout.

Then we have Jet Black. This rolls in, riffs gradually evolving into the soundscape to make the inevitable drop hit with even more impact. The gentle melodic elements contrast with percussive sounds which ride over the bassline and combine into exactly the kind of dancefloor roller that 2DB are known for. This synthesis of tough beats, fat bass and unfolding high-end sequencing show exactly what this production team do best.

For DJs who want to keep their sets fresh and with a touch of the classic, 2DB’s releases are always must-play items. So, inevitably, you’ll be hearing a lot more of Bassface and Jet Black via raves and airwaves worldwide.

RELEASE DATE: 27th January 2013

Bratislava-based L Plus has proved over a string of heavy-duty releases that Slovakians can do D&B too. His most recent offering, the Amazing EP firmly established him as a major asset to the scene with an ear for the classic elements of rave music, and an uncanny talent for building an atmospheric soundscape.

And now, he’s flexing those skills again in this release.

Faces is a perfect example of what is fast-becoming the signature L Plus style. Arpeggiated keys and gentle melodic patterns lead into a speeded-up vocal sample which harks back to nineties lighters-in-the- air moments. And then, just like rave music in the early nineties, it all goes hardcore, building into a drop that delivers powerful bass and digital bleep-riffs. Even with the madness that ensues, L Plus never loses sight of the melodic underpinning of the track, creating a monster that reintroduces the power of early raving for modern parties. And, just in case you want to ease your audience in to this sound more gently, he provides a Radio Edit to educate the mainstream.

The other track on this release is Heavy Mental. This is a masterclass in building and releasing tension. The intro rises and rises, using wide pads punctuated by percussive stabs to signpost things to come. Then a further lift is provided by a ladder of chords which leads straight into an explosive drop that throws a wall of energy in your face. Interplay between high and low end, melody combined with aggression, all contribute towards a tune that’s a guaranteed dancefloor filler.

So, L Plus has brought his special brand of twenty-first century rave music back for another outing. Faces and Heavy Mental are tunes that will grace the sets of history-literate DJs everywhere.

Tantrum Desire – Guided Rhythm

RELEASE DATE: 20th January 2013

It’s not just the drum and bass die-hards who are getting into the Tantrum Desire sound. Their last release, What Is Your Desire featuring the monumental vocals of I-Kay, thrust this production duo further into the spotlight with airplay across Radio 1, 1Xtra and Kiss 109. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of views for the video and strong support from DJs in parties worldwide which, for artists of this calibre, you can take for granted.

So, sounds like they’d be satisfied with hitting those levels. Nope. They’re back to push things a few notches further.

Guided Rhythm takes the Tantrum Desire formula and tweaks it. We know they can inject energy into a tune, and here they deliver a double dose. Right from the word go, percussive sounds project anticipation through the speakers. And then the tension’s cranked even further with old skool stabs and a vocal riff that will make this tune immediately recognisable. As the drums build alongside bass sweeps you know you’re in the hands of consummate dancefloor destruction technicians. And then the drop heralds bassline power and a rise through more high-voltage synth-work that won’t let the rave slow down.

And that’s just the drum and bass mix.

Next up we have a dubstep reworking that reconstitutes the elements into something that’s completely different. Not just a switch of tempo but a whole switch of vibe. The sparser beats allow the intro stabs and vocal lick to develop into a drop that delivers bassline savagery. With the aggressive bass played off against a counterpoint of alarm-call high-end sounds, this delivers a late-night alert to wake up and keep skanking.

So, Guided Rhythm is a demonstration of Tantrum Desire’s ability to keep their style evolving and twist up their sounds for any vibe. Whether you spin D&B or dubstep, these are going to find their way into discerning DJs sets across raves and airwaves wherever bass is appreciated.
